Minister Ahern welcomes ETA declaration of permanent ceasefire.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, T.D., has welcomed the announcement of a permanent ceasefire from 24 March. Minister Ahern said:

”This seems to be a very positive development and I understand that the initial reactions in Spain have been generally favourable: any move to a permanent ceasefire and acceptance of purely democratic means has to be welcomed.”

Minister Ahern emphasised that the next steps in the process are for the Spanish Government and elected representatives to consider.  The Minister acknowledged:

“While there are similarities between all conflict situations, each has its own specific characteristics and requirements. Nevertheless, we in Ireland have a particular understanding of the value of peace. I wish the Spanish people and Government every success on the path towards a permanent peace.”
