The Minister for Foreign Affairs announces the death of Ambassador Seán Whelan


The Minister for Foreign Affairs announces with deep regret the sudden death of the Irish Ambassador to Turkey, Mr. Seán Whelan.


Ambassador Whelan, who had been in Turkey for three years, had previously served in the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union, the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and the Embassies to France, Saudi Arabia and the Lebanon.


Ambassador Whelan’s remains will be brought back to Ireland, arriving at Casement aerodrome on Tuesday afternoon. Other funeral arrangements will follow.
