Minister for Foreign Affairs welcomes outcome of Referendum

on Amsterdam Treaty

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. David Andrews T.D., has welcomed the result of the Referendum on the Amsterdam Treaty.

"The result confirms that the people want Ireland to continue as an active member of the European Union. This is the fourth time the Irish electorate have shown their commitment to making a full success of Ireland's membership of the European Union. The Treaty of Amsterdam contains many provisions of direct relevance to the needs of Irish voters and underscores the European Union's commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.

"Though a complex document, the Amsterdam Treaty is about down-to earth questions: jobs, freedom and security, a clean environment and accountability to the voter. I believe its value will become more apparent when it comes into force. The next few years will be of crucial importance to the Union as it prepares to meet the challenges ahead, including further enlargement. I believe the Amsterdam Treaty equips us to face these challenges more effectively."
