Andrews gives five good reasons for a resounding Yes to Amsterdam

In a final appeal for a big ‘Yes' vote in favour of the Amsterdam Treaty, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr David Andrews, T.D., has said that a ‘Yes' to Amsterdam means ‘Yes' to Europe and ‘Yes' to our continued national advancement in Europe.

Mr Andrews urged voters to bear in mind a number of key points which support a ‘Yes' vote.

First, the fact that the European Union is a project for peace, security and prosperity founded on principles of democracy and human rights. The Treaty is necessary if the Union is to continue pursuing these goals for Europe and for the wider world. Contrary to what its opponents have alleged, the Treaty will not affect Irish neutrality in any way whatsoever.

Second, the huge economic benefits Ireland has enjoyed over 25 years of EU membership.

Third, the advantages of EU membership have touched every aspect of life in Ireland and are central to the success we enjoy today.

Fourth, the Treaty of Amsterdam is the latest and necessary step in the European project. Over the years, Ireland has made great gains from having been a committed partner in building Europe while, at the same time, safeguarding our core national interests. Saying ‘Yes' to Amsterdam will enable us to continue this pattern.

Fifth, the Treaty is a measured and carefully balanced response to the real challenges facing the Union. It will enable the Union to address more effectively the direct concerns of its citizens and will equip it to function more effectively.

Mr Andrews said that "all Irish interests were well served in the negotiation of this Treaty and in its outcome. The Treaty has a great many merits and no negatives for Ireland. I call on the voters of Ireland to give a resounding ‘Yes' to the continued betterment of Ireland's interests in Europe."
