January 10, 2013 - Presentation of the Programme and the Priorities of the Irish eu2013 Presidency by H.E. Ambassador Charles Sheehan

 

On Thursday, January 10,  2013  Ambassador Charles Sheehan presented the Presidency Programme and the Priorities of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union to guests and media at the premises of the European Parliament Office in Athens with an excellent turnout from all major Greek media.

December 10, 2012 – Dinner at the Ambassador's Residence in Honour of the Former Prime Minister of Ireland, Mr. John Bruton.

On Monday, December 10, 2012 H.E. Ambassador Charles Sheehan hosted a dinner at the Irish Embassy Residence in honour of former Taoiseach and  Chairman of the International Financial Services Centre, Mr. John Bruton.

Mr. Bruton was the Keynote speaker at KPMG’s Executive Dinner which took place on December 11, 2012 at the Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel.  This  event was supported by the Embassy of Ireland in Greece and HIBA (Hellenic Irish Business Association).

Ambassador Charles Sheehan addressed an audience of Greek businessmen, academics, diplomats (Greek and foreign), students, press  and members of the Irish community at the Ambassador’s Forum of the Institute of Diplomacy & Global Affairs in Athens on “Irish Perspectives from 4 Decades in the European Union

The lecture/presentation focused on four themes (Governance and Institutions, Economic Development, Policy Concerns and Society) that are fundamental to Ireland’s experience of the European Union and are connected to challenges Ireland will face during the EU2013 Presidency.

March 22, 2012  -  Embassy of Ireland Lecture at the University of Indianapolis in Athens

The Embassy of Ireland, in co-operation with the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies in Athens and the University of Indianapolis presented the Embassy of Ireland Lecture 2012 at the University of Indianapolis Cultural Centre in the Plaka area of the city of Athens.

The guest lecturer at this event was Professor Marianne Elliott, Director of the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool who spoke on the topic of Religion and Identity in Ireland. The lecture was followed by a lively question and answer session and subsequently a reception on the roof top of the cultural centre.

March 12, 2012 - Harp Concert by Diana Rowan at the Black Box Theatre, Deree College in Athens

The Embassy of Ireland hosted, with the co-operation of the American College of Greece, a harp concert by Diana Rowan, Music from the Ends of Europe, on Monday 12th March at the Black Box Theatre at Deree College.

Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011

Athens played host to the Special Olympics World Summer Games from 25th June to 4th July 2011. Team Ireland was represented by 126 Athletes and 49 coaches. Along with this group, over 200 Irish volunteers, and over 400 family members travelled to Greece to be part of the Games. The Ambassador, H.E. Charles Sheehan, organised a reception in honour of Team Ireland. Present at the reception were Minister for Tourism and Sports, Michael Ring T.D., Matt English, CEO Special Olympics Ireland, Teresa McCabe, Deputy Head of Delegation Team Ireland, and Tim and Sam Shriver, grandchildren of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

New Ambassador presents credentials to President Papoulias – 28 September 2010

The new Ambassador of Ireland to Greece, Charles Sheehan, today presented his letters of credence to President Papoulias in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace today. 

The ceremony marks the formal beginning of Ambassador Sheehan’s mission in Greece.  The ceremony began with the playing of the Greek National Anthem which was followed by a private discussion between the  President  and the Ambassador in which they discussed bilateral relations between the countries and broader issues, including developments in the European Union.  The ceremony concluded with the playing of Amhrán na bhFiann by the Band of the Presidential Guard.

Ambassador Sheehan is the ninth Ambassador to take up residence in Athens since Ireland and Greece first established diplomatic relations on a residential basis in 1978.

At 20.00 on 14 October 2010 Dr Christa Lerm Hayes (University of Ulster) will give a lecture entitled “How Joyce Plays into Contemporary Art” at the ABOUT: Gallery, Miaouli 18, Psyrri. This lecture forms part of the “Kyrographia” exhibition by Yiannis Melanitis at the Gallery. The Embassy is proud to support both the lecture and the exhibition. At 19.00 on 21 October 2010 Dr. Michael Clarke (NUI Galway) will give a lecture entitled “Inventing a Classical Past for Ireland” at the Irish Institute for Hellenic Studies in Athens, Notara 51a, Athens.
