Minister Coveney welcomes Appointment of Envoy for Western Sahara

08 October 2021Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney T.D. welcomes the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara.
Minister Coveney said “Ireland is pleased that this important post has been filled, having been vacant since 2019. I am confident that Mr de Mistura, with his ability and extensive experience, will build on the commendable efforts of his predecessor, Mr. Horst Köhler, in contributing to a reinvigoration of the UN-led process on Western Sahara. I wish the new Personal Envoy well in this critical role. Ireland will continue to support the UN-led effort to make progress in the search for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, including through our membership of the Security Council, and we encourage all parties to engage constructively with Mr. de Mistura.”
