Recruitment of Research and Communications Officer, Consulate General of Ireland – Atlanta 

The Consulate of Ireland in Atlanta represents and promotes Ireland in Atlanta and the south east of the U.S.  The Consulate’s functions include economic and political work, consular affairs, and engagement with the Irish diaspora in the south east.

The Consulate is now recruiting an Atlanta-based Research and Communications Officer.  The successful candidate will require strong research, communications, organisational and project management skills.  She or he will have the enthusiasm, flexibility and people skills needed to deliver as part of a small and dynamic team working directly to the Consul General. 

Position details

Start date: Immediate 
Location: Consulate General of Ireland, Atlanta
Contract duration: Initial twelve-month temporary contract.
Working hours: 40 hours per week
Salary: Starting at $42,436 gross per annum. Candidates will be subject to the employment and taxation law of the USA.
Annual Leave: Minimum of 20 days per annum, plus public holidays
Closing Date: Wednesday, January 13 at 4pm (U.S. Eastern time).   

Role of Research and Communications Officer

Assisting Consul General with:

  • Researching, mapping and developing opportunities for Consulate activities across the south east of the U.S. 
  • Drafting briefing papers on economic, political and other topics
  • Engagement and liaison with a range of contacts and partners, including State and City administrations, Chambers of Commerce and educational institutions
  • Organisation of visits, meetings and promotional events   
  • Contact database management
  • Media and social media initiatives communicating Ireland
  • Management of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising
  • Consular and administration projects

Other occasional tasks:

  • Providing cover for other members of Consulate team during leave or travel
  • Assisting with provision of information on Irish consular services and emergency assistance to Irish citizens (training will be provided)
  • Support for the activities of the Consul General and other Consulate staff as required

Skills required

  • Willing to work independently on specific projects as well as within a close-knit team
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • Strong organisational and project management abilities
  • High level of discretion, commitment, reliability, and attention to detail
    • Strong awareness of local politics, economics and cultural life.
    • Passionate interest in Ireland and international affairs. Prior knowledge of Ireland an advantage.
    • Knowledge of economic and trade promotion technique  
    • IT and social media skills

Minimum requirements

  • Candidates must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in the USA (for US Citizens – US passport, US birth certificate or US naturalization; for Permanent Residents - Green Card).
  • Candidates do not need to be Irish citizens but knowledge and experience of Ireland is a distinct advantage.  Candidates must be fluent in English.    
  • Third-level/college degree or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant professional experience (see application form)
  • Eligibility to work in the USA

The successful candidate will receive a conditional offer of employment which will include a breakdown of the salary and benefits offered as well as information about terms and conditions of employment. The conditional offer will also outline medical and security requirements, whereby the successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory medical report on the state of their health and may also be required to pass relevant background and security checks.
