Irish Community in Malawi

There is a small but vibrant Irish community in Malawi, based mostly in Lilongwe and Blantyre. The highlight of the year for the community is the celebration of St Patrick’s Day - the Irish society’s celebrations in Lilongwe are thought to the biggest of their kind in the country! Hundreds of people – Malawians, Irish and beyond attend a concert and Céilí featuring Irish culture, food and drink.

We provide grants to Irish organisations across the world, focusing in particular on the most vulnerable of our emigrants.

Presidential Award

The Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad recognises sustained, distinguished service to Ireland, its communities abroad or its international reputation by those living abroad.
