Greening the Equator for St. Patrick’s Day 2015

Greening the Equator for St. Patrick's Day 2015

As part of the Global Greening initiative, the Embassy partnered with the Uganda Tourism Board and the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Maria Mutagamba, in turning the Equator landmark green. This was done with sponsorship and technical support from Umeme Ltd. and produced a lovely effect which was enjoyed by all who drove along the busy Kampala – Masaka highway for almost three weeks. The event was marked by a launch on the evening of February 27th, involving press, local government, and other stakeholders, where the CEO of Uganda Tourism Board and Ambassador Dónal Cronin flicked the switch and set the Equator aglow, which remained so until March 17th. This was the first ever Global Greening in East Africa and came at an opportune time, as the Uganda Tourism Board is currently marketing tourism in Uganda to British and Irish audiences. This event garnered considerable news coverage, with at least 5 separate news stories, and received widespread attention on Twitter.
