Irish Film Brooklyn selected as opening film at 2016 European Film Festival in Rwanda

The Embassy of Ireland to Uganda & Rwanda is delighted to announce that Ireland will be represented at the European Film Festival taking place from 13 to 23 October in Rwanda. Come and see 12 films from 8 EU countries. Films will be screened in Kigali, Huye and Rubavu and tickets are free.

We especially invite you to the opening night screening of Irish Film Brooklyn on Thursday 13 October at 19.30. Brooklyn is a 2015 British-Canadian-Irish romantic drama film directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Hornby, based on Colm Tóibín's novel of the same name. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, and Julie Walters. Set in 1951 and 1952, the film tells the story of a young Irish woman's immigration to Brooklyn as she struggles to come to terms with life in her new land. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. This screening is supported by Irish Film Institute International, funded by Culture Ireland and The Arts Council of Ireland.

Ireland has a long history of emigration dating as far back as the 17th century, but especially after the Great Famine of 1845-52.. Some estimate that the Irish diaspora may total as many as

70 million people. In 2015, in recognition of the valuable contribution that the Irish community abroad has made to Ireland throughout history the Government launched a new strategy for the Diaspora; Global People.

The festival is presented by the Delegation of the European Union to Rwanda, Embassies and Cultural Institutes of the EU Member States in partnership with KWETU Institute.
