[Press Release] Visit by Eoghan Murphy T.D.

アイルランド 住宅・都市計画・地方自治体省
オーウェン・マーフィー大臣 来日
2018年3月14日~19日

Ireland’s Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Mr. Eoghan Murphy T.D., will visit Japan from 14-19 March.

His visit is part of the annual global outreach by representatives of the Irish Government for Ireland’s national day, St. Patrick’s Day, and this year ministers will travel to 35 different countries. Minister Murphy will meet with a wide range of important political and economic contacts while in Japan, as well as with members of the Irish community and the many Japanese musicians, dancers and cultural enthusiasts who support the celebrations.

Among several political engagements during his stay, Minister Murphy will hold a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Mr. Keiichi Ishii.

Minister Murphy will brief members of Keidanren on political and economic developments in Ireland and Europe, including on the topic of Brexit, and will hold a press conference for Japanese and international media at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan.

A number of meetings will be held with Irish trade and investment partners in order to strengthen the bilateral economic relationship. On Saturday 17 March, the Minister will launch a three day promotional campaign of Irish seafood at AEON supermarkets, which takes place in 100 stores nationwide, and is organised by Bord Bia/The Irish Food Board.

On Sunday 18 March,  the Minister will lead the 26th Tokyo St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Omotesando Avenue, Harajuku, and attend the second day of Asia’s largest celebration of Irish food, sports and culture, the ‘I Love Ireland Festival’ in Yoyogi Park.

Following the Tokyo itinerary, Minister Murphy will travel to Hiroshima, where he will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph and pay his respect to the victims of the atomic bombing.  The Minister will also hold a meeting with a hibakusha (A-bomb survivor) to hear directly about the atomic bombing of Japan and he will meet with Mayor Kazumi Matsui.

Welcoming the Minister’s visit, the Ambassador of Ireland to Japan, Ms. Anne Barrington, said: “The visit of Minister Murphy is an opportunity to reaffirm our strong economic and political links with Japan. The agreement on the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement will open many opportunities for Irish business in Japan, and ministerial level visits play an important role in promoting Ireland’s economic interests.

“We are also delighted that the minister will be able to participate in some of the St. Patrick’s Day activities taking place, which attract thousands of Japanese fans of Ireland every year. We invite everyone to join in with the celebrations taking place in their community.”
