Statement by the Tánaiste on the arrest of Ratko Mladić

International Law, Press Releases, Europe, 2011

"I welcome the arrest of Ratko Mladić today by the Serbian authorities and look forward to his swift transfer to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

The arrest of Mladić represents another important step in addressing the appalling atrocities committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s.   True reconciliation in the Western Balkans can only be helped by this arrest.

Ireland and its EU partners have consistently urged the Serbian Government to take all the necessary measures to apprehend ICTY indictees.  Cooperation with ICTY by the governments in the region is an essential part of the process of securing long term peace and stability in the Western Balkans."
