Statement by the Tánaiste welcoming the appointment of Emily O’Reilly as European Ombudsman

European Union, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, Press Releases, Ireland, 2013

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore T.D., has warmly welcomed the appointment of Emily O’Reilly to the post of European Ombudsman.
The Tánaiste congratulated her personally following the vote in the European Parliament which had earlier adopted the EU budget deal negotiated under the Irish Presidency.

Welcoming the appointment the Tánaiste said:

“I was delighted to be able to be among the first to congratulate Emily O’Reilly on her well-deserved appointment as European Ombudsman in Strasbourg today.  The level of support that her candidacy received from across the political and geographical spectra is a measure of the strength of her candidacy and of the high regard for her achievements as Irish Ombudsman and Information Commissioner.  I wish her well as she takes on her new responsibilities and assure her of Ireland’s full support for her new role and for the independence of her office.”
