Minister attends NI Political Talks and meets with US Senator Gary Hart

Minister Charles Flanagan, Northern Ireland Peace Process, Press Releases, Northern Ireland, 2014

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan T.D, is in Belfast this week (3-4 December) for the eighth week of Northern Ireland political talks. Minister Flanagan will meet with Senator Gary Hart, Personal Representative of the US Secretary of State, who will be in Stormont House this week for meetings with the Governments and all the parties as well as for a series public engagements across the North.

Speaking this morning, Minister Flanagan said:

“Last week I provided the Taoiseach with a progress report on the talks. We are now in December when the window for reaching agreement before Christmas is narrowing quickly. The focus has to be on determining whether there is sufficient common ground and political will to deliver a comprehensive, fair and credible agreement. I am in no doubt but that this will require difficult negotiation and compromise.

I welcome the presence in Belfast this week of Senator Hart. His personal engagement underlines the commitment of the US to help Northern Ireland build strong institutions, a vibrant economy and an enduring peace. These are the aims of the current talks also. I look forward to meeting with him later today”.
