Minister Flanagan to meet Senator Gary Hart in Belfast

Minister Charles Flanagan, Northern Ireland Peace Process, Press Releases, Northern Ireland, 2014

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD, is in Belfast today to attend political talks.

Speaking this morning Minister Flanagan said:

“My first meeting this morning will be with US Senator Gary Hart. I am looking forward to engaging again with Senator Hart and discussing the important role that he can play in the Talks now underway.

“The Irish Government deeply appreciates US support for the Talks process.

“The challenges facing the Northern Ireland parties in the Process are substantive and complex and, therefore, the appointment by the US Secretary of State John Kerry, of a man of Senator Hart’s experience and ability as his personal representative is very welcome indeed.

“Engagement by the two governments, assisted by the US administration,  is providing a supportive context for the ongoing discussions, as well as providing encouragement for dialogue and compromise.

“I will also meet with each of the Northern Ireland Executive parties on the important topic of implementing the matters outstanding from the Good Friday and the St. Andrews Agreements. In particular, I look forward to my first meeting with the DUP since the current Talks process commenced."
