Statement by Minister Charlie Flanagan following Meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister in New York27/4/15
As part of his ongoing high-level engagement on the case of Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa, Minister Flanagan met today (Monday) in New York with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
Minister Flanagan stated:
“I took the opportunity to raise the case of Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa once again with my Egyptian counterpart when I met him in New York today. We discussed the case in some detail.
"In our discussion I expressed my disappointment that a decision on Ibrahim Halawa’s application for bail, an application supported by the Irish government, had been refused along with other bail applications in the case.
"I underlined once again to Minister Shoukry the Government’s strong desire to see this young Irish citizen released by the Egyptian authorities as soon as possible so that he can return to his family and his studies in Dublin.
"I also stressed to Minister Shoukry our strong desire to ensure our citizen’s welfare for as long as he remains in detention, and it was clear that his Ministry will continue to facilitate active consular assistance and access for our Embassy in Cairo.
"Minister Shoukry emphasised that the matter was currently before the Egyptian courts but stated that he is conscious of the Irish Government's concerns regarding Ibrahim Halawa's welfare. On the conditions of his ongoing detention, he undertook to pursue the Irish Government's concerns regarding Ibrahim Halawa's welfare with the appropriate Egyptian authorities.
"I expressed appreciation to Minister Shoukry for his availability, and that of his officials, in this case, and we agreed that our channels of communication would remain open about this important matter.
"My Department will continue to provide ongoing consular support to Ibrahim Halawa and his family and to take all appropriate action that is in his best interests and focussed on a positive outcome for him in the run up to the next scheduled hearing on 6 June.”
