Minister Flanagan to meet British Foreign Secretary on EU and international matters

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charles Flanagan T.D., will meet British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond M.P, this morning (Friday) to discuss EU and a range of international issues.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Minister Flanagan said:

“I am very pleased to welcome my colleague Philip Hammond back to Dublin. Since his first visit here as Foreign Secretary last December, he and I have kept in regular contact on international issues of mutual interest, in particular, the UK’s membership of the European Union.

“This will be our first formal bilateral meeting since the British General Election and will form part of regular political contacts with the UK Government on this issue.

“In addition to EU matters, Foreign Secretary Hammond and I will discuss the ongoing crisis in the Mediterranean region, including the EU’s comprehensive response to the tragic loss of life, and the need to address the root causes of the current emergency.

“Our discussion will also focus on recent developments and prospects for long overdue progress in the Middle East Peace Process.”

This bilateral meeting is part of an ongoing close engagement between the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and the British Foreign and Commonwealth office.
