Innovation to the fore as Minister of State Sherlock's visit to Estonia concludes11 June 2015
Mr Sean Sherlock, TD, Minister of State for Development, Trade Promotion and North-South Co-operation at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, today (Thursday) concludes a two-day visit to Estonia, during which he addressed a Digital Marketing Workshop delivered as part of Enterprise Ireland's first Market Study Visit to the country.
The workshop, organised by the new Irish-Estonian Business Network (IEBN) and also addressed by Andrew Tobin of Carlow-based digital marketing consultants T2, among others, took place on the second of three legs of the Market Study Visit. The ten participating companies, drawn from across Ireland, visited Lithuania beforehand and subsequently travelled onwards to Latvia, to scope out the potential for partnerships with Baltic companies across a range of sectors including construction and ICT.
The market study visit is one of three trade visits the Minister of State is participating in this month, organised by Enterprise Ireland and supported by the Embassy network. In late May, Minister Sherlock led an aviation-focused trade mission to the UK, and he will lead another aviation-focused trade event to France next week.
Speaking at the Workshop, Minister Sherlock said:
"Just as Ireland is a small open economy seen as a gateway to Western Europe and even the US, Estonia is a small innovative economy, well positioned to serve as a springboard for Irish companies into the Nordic-Baltic region.
"I have had the opportunity to meet companies participating in the market study visit, local Irish members of the IEBN, and to see first hand Estonia's strengths in the digital sphere. There is great potential for collaboration between Irish and Estonian companies across a range of sectors, and this is something I know Enterprise Ireland, the IEBN, and our Ambassador in Tallinn, H.E. Frank Flood, would warmly welcome."
The Minister also had the opportunity to meet senior representatives from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communication, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Estonian Parliament, Enterprise Estonia, and the e-Estonia showroom to view demonstrations of Estonia's national digital infrastructure in the areas of eResidency (for business people), eGovernance, and eAuthentication.
