New Opportunity now to resolve impasse and fully implement the Stormont House Agreement – Minister Flanagan

Minister Charlie Flanagan and Minister of State Seán Sherlock will represent the Irish Government at a Stormont House Agreement Review meeting today (Thursday). The Agreement, concluded on 23 December, sets out the basis for new political, social and economic changes in Northern Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Minister Flanagan said:

“This week has already seen some positive momentum as Northern Ireland’s parties continue to work together to get the Executive’s finances back on to a more sustainable footing. I encourage the Executive Parties to take full advantage of the space this has created to resolve outstanding difficulties and to refocus their full attention on implementing the Stormont House Agreement in its totality.

“We must not lose sight of the enormous effort that has already been invested into making the Agreement a reality, not least on the framework for dealing with the past, where steady progress continues. If we work together, we can make sure that this Agreement delivers for the people of this island as a whole.”

Minister of State for North/South Cooperation, Mr Seán Sherlock, TD, added:

“Today’s meeting will be a useful opportunity to take stock of the good progress that has already been made across many of the Agreement’s work streams. We must take all the opportunities for advancement under this Agreement. The Government remains committed to doing everything in its power to support the full implementation of the Agreement.”
