Minister Deenihan to host SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon Diaspora Event with Connect Ireland

Minister for the Diaspora, Jimmy Deenihan TD, will welcome hundreds of members of the Irish diaspora to Dublin this weekend to take part in the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday, 26 October.

On Sunday 25 October, Minister Deenihan will host an event with ConnectIreland in the Convention Centre to specially recognise those who have travelled from all over the world to take part in one of Ireland’s most popular annual sporting events.

Speaking ahead of the weekend's activities Minister Deenihan said:

I am delighted to welcome home members of the Global Irish diaspora, demonstrating once more the strong connection between Ireland and its overseas communities.

The Irish community around the world is one of the best resources that we have in terms of promoting Ireland as a trade, investment, business and tourism destination, with many of them already having become successful connectors between Ireland and overseas companies interested in expanding into and creating jobs in Ireland.

Earlier this year, I issued an invitation to members of the diaspora to join us for two very important events in the Irish community and sporting calendar: the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon.

"We are expecting significant numbers of competitors to travel to Ireland for the marathon, many of them either Irish-born or of Irish extraction. This is due in no small part to the work of Sonia O’Sullivan, Diaspora Ambassador for the Marathon, Jim Aughney of the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon and Frank Greally, editor of the "Irish Runner” magazine, and I wish to thank them all for their sterling work and dedication.

Inviting members of the diaspora to participate in major sporting and community events like the Dublin Marathon is just one of a number of actions taken by Minister Deenihan and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to facilitate engagement with Ireland’s global family.
