Minister Flanagan Welcomes Loyalist Announcement

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Charles Flanagan T.D., has welcomed today’s announcement by loyalist leaders that they eschew violence.

Encouraging them in their desire to improve their communities, Minister Flanagan said:

“I welcome today’s declaration by loyalist leaders that they will eschew all violence and criminality.

“This declaration, together with the establishment of the Loyalist Community Council, creates an opportunity to positively transform some of Northern Ireland’s most deprived communities. I welcome the Council’s intention to focus on addressing educational underachievement and on encouraging respect for law and order.

“I look forward to these declared intentions being converted into positive change on the ground. This will require commitment, cohesion and courage on behalf of the loyalist leadership, as well as appropriate encouragement and support from government agencies. Achieving a positive transformation in deprived loyalist communities would represent a major contribution towards the better future for Northern Ireland that we all desire.”
