Minister Sherlock hails Cork Airport transatlantic win as ‘game changer’

MoS Sean Sherlock, Ireland, Trade, Travel, Press Releases, Ireland, 2015

Norwegian’s New Cork-Boston & Cork-New York Services A Major Strategic Boost For Region

Minister for Trade Promotion at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Seán Sherlock T.D., has welcomed today’s announcement of a new transatlantic route by Norwegian Air to operate a 4-5 flights per week between Cork international Airport and Boston from May 2016.

It also intends to launch a new Cork-New York service in 2017. A Cork-Barcelona service is also planned from May 2016.

“This is a game changer not only in the strategic approach of Cork Airport moving forward but for the entire region which will benefit enormously from this announcement,” said Minister Sherlock, speaking from New York where he is attending the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit.

“I know that management at Cork Airport have worked hard to secure this link and credit must go to them for their success."

The new routes will be operated under Norwegian’s Irish subsidiary Norwegian Air International (NAI) and form part of the airline’s plans for continued expansion in the UK and Ireland. The airline plans to operate its new Cork transatlantic services with a narrow bodied Boeing 737-800 aircraft and the new Boeing 737MAX when it becomes available.

Minister Sherlock added:

“Cork Airport is growing in confidence and that growth is down to the trust and faith that the people of the Munster region have placed in it. As Minister for Trade Promotion at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this opens multiple new markets for indigenous companies in the Munster area looking to scale up to the global market. I visited International Markets Fair this week hosted by Enterprise Ireland and know from speaking with investors and companies what opportunities are available. This is a massive win for the Cork region.”
