Minister Coveney announces that over half a million passports have already issued this year

Minister Simon Coveney, Passports, Press Releases, Ireland, 2017

“It is better for you and it is better for us in serving you”

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney TD, has announced that over 500,000 passports have already been issued by the Passport Service this year.

Commenting on the figures, Minister Coveney said:

“Just over halfway through 2017, the Passport Service has already issued over 500,000 passports, with applications up an average of 10% over the same period last year.

“The online passport renewal service, accessible at www.dfa.ie/passportonline, has, since its launch at the end of March, contributed significantly to our ability to meet the high demand for passports. Online renewals now account for almost 17% of all applications, well ahead of initial projections.

“The target turnaround time for online renewal is ten working days plus postage. In actual fact, 90% of online applications are currently being processed within just five working days. The online renewal service is, therefore, a prime example of innovation driving excellence in the delivery of services to Irish citizens.

“We are also meeting the target turnaround time of fifteen working days for Passport Express renewals, despite the extremely high volumes being received. First-time applications and applications to renew lost or stolen passports take longer because extra checks are necessary.

“I would ask that anyone applying for a passport would first be sure to visit our website, www.dfa.ie/passport, to find out which service and turnaround time suits them best.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to remind any families heading overseas during the remaining weeks of the summer holidays to check the validity of their children’s passports, which are valid for a shorter period than adults”.

“So, for anyone still looking forward to summer holidays abroad,  my advice is straightforward:

“It is better for you and it is better for us in serving you”

Minister Coveney also reminded all passport holders to register with the passport office for a free passport renewal reminder e-mail at https://www.eforms.gov.ie/en/reminder/passport/ and to download the Department’s award winning travel advice app Travelwise.
