Minister Coveney welcomes the achievement of the Passport Service, in winning the 2017 World Class Civil Service Award
at the Civil Service Excellence and Innovation Awards
The Minister for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D. and Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development, Mr. Ciarán Cannon T.D. have congratulated the Passport Service for its outstanding achievement in winning the World Class Civil Service award at the Civil Service Excellence and Innovation Awards last night.
These awards recognise excellence and innovation and showcase best practice across the Civil Service, implementing a commitment under Action 13 of the Civil Service Renewal Plan. The award was made in respect of the Online Passport Renewal Project, which saw launch of the online passport application system in March of this year.
This innovative service means that Irish citizens renewing their passport can do so online anywhere in the world, 24 hours per days, 7 days per week. Processing time for an online application is 10 days plus postage time, with no requirement for forms, witnesses or printed photos.
Welcoming the decision to grant the award to the Online Passport Renewal Project, Minister Coveney congratulated the Passport Service staff for developing this innovative service, which he said places the citizen first. Citizens can apply to renew their passports online 24 hours a day using a website that is accessible and user friendly. It is one of the first fully online passport renewal services in Europe and has also resulted in major efficiency gains for the Passport Service including faster processing of applications, increase in data quality, and more flexibility in the distribution of work.
Welcoming the award, Minister Coveney said,
‘I am very proud to say that the Passport Service continues to perform very strongly in delivering excellent customer service to Irish citizens across the word. Over 100,000 citizens have already been issued with a passport through the online system since its launch only 8 months ago. This award is a reflection of that excellent service, while also demonstrating the innovation, dedication and enthusiasm of staff in my Department to deliver a world class service.’
Minister of State Cannon added,
‘The Passport Service continues to set an exemplary standard in harnessing technology to meet the needs of Irish citizens. Citizens availing of the online passport application service from overseas benefit from a very significant reduction in processing and delivery time for their new passport. I congratulate all those involved in delivering this result.’
