Statement by the Tánaiste on the verdict of the inquest into the 1974 Birmingham Pub Bombings

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney TD, today responded to the news of the verdict of the inquest into the 1974 Birmingham Pub Bombings directed by Sir Peter Thornton QC.

The Tánaiste said, “At this particularly difficult time, our thoughts are with all the families who lost loved ones in the Birmingham bombings in 1974. We must remember that there are many victims of the Troubles in Britain who have absolutely the same right to acknowledgment, justice and truth and whatever healing is possible in their cases as do those on this island.

While the impact of the Troubles is most profound in Northern Ireland, the bereavement and the pain for each family is no less, wherever you live.

I hope that the verdict today will bring families a step closer to the truth of what happened to their loved ones and access to the justice they deserve.”
