Statement by Tánaiste Simon Coveney, T.D. on the death of H.E. Mr. Yukiya Amano

"It is with much sadness that I heard this morning of the passing of H.E. Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Throughout his diplomatic career Mr. Amano established himself as a champion for many issues related to disarmament and non-proliferation, and was held in high regard by all those who knew him.

In his ten years at the IAEA, Mr. Amano worked tirelessly to fulfil the aims of the Agency, demonstrating a strong commitment to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and supporting and promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family and colleagues during this difficult time."
