Minister Coveney announces 1/3 increase in Irish support for UN Peacebuilding Fund

26 January 2021Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney, T.D., today announced that Ireland will increase its funding to the UN Peacebuilding Fund by one third over the period 2020 to 2024, a total of €10 million.
Speaking at a Replenishment Conference for the Fund, hosted online by the UN Secretary-General and the Governments of Canada, Germany, Sierra Leone and Sudan, Minister Coveney said:
“The Peacebuilding Fund can help prevent conflict before lives are lost and costly peacekeeping interventions are needed, and sustain peace in fragile contexts.
“Ireland was one of the earliest supporters of the Peacebuilding Fund. Since its inception in 2005 we have contributed more than €20 million. We are very proud to be one of its top donors.”
The increased funding will be provided as flexible funding which enables the Fund to act quickly to prevent conflict and sustain peace.
