Tánaiste welcomes adoption of JAM card

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin TD announced today that the Passport and Consular public offices have become JAM card friendly. JAM stands for Just A Minute and allows people with a hidden disability or communication barrier to let others know that they need extra time in a simple and discreet non-verbal manner.

Speaking about the initiative the Tánaiste said:

“I welcome the adoption of the JAM card initiative by my Department’s customer facing offices, the Passport Service and Consular Directorate. The JAM card assists citizens with a hidden disability or communication barrier to let others know they may need extra time to communicate. A priority of this Government is to facilitate a more fully autism-inclusive and neurodiverse friendly society.

“The adoption of the JAM card means that staff in the Department of Foreign Affairs are now better equipped to serve and proactively assist citizens who may have a hidden disability. The adoption of the JAM card, and the awareness of it will improve the access and the quality of service we provide for our citizens who may have a hidden disability as well as help to embed a culture of dignity and respect in the workplace.”

The CEO of NOW Group Maeve Monaghan said:

‘‘We are delighted that the Passport and Consular Public Offices in Ireland have partnered with NOW Group to become JAM Card friendly and recognise the value of investing in training their staff to provide great customer service for people with both visible and hidden disabilities. Giving ‘Just A Minute’ of time and patience will offer support and a welcoming environment to those with a hidden disability or communication barrier, ensuring they receive equal access and quality customer service.’’

The Tánaiste added:

“Early indications are that 2023 will be another busy year for the Passport Service. I would encourage all citizens who are planning to travel abroad this year to check now that their passport is in date.  If you do need to apply for a new passport, Passport Online is the fastest and most convenient way for you to apply.”
