MoS Ciarán Cannon, TD - Reception with Irish Community in Zambia

I am delighted to be here, and to get an opportunity meet with the Irish community living and working in Zambia.

As Minister for the Diaspora as well as International Development, meeting you has allowed me to fill both parts of my brief at the same time!

I know that connections between Ireland and Zambia go back a long way, and that the role of Irish missionaries is hard to overstate, particularly in Education and Health. I also understand that Ireland played a strong role in educating many of the first generation of Zambian Civil Servants.

I would also like to acknowledge the work of the Wild Geese Society in promoting Ireland in Zambia and also their role in helping newly arrived Irish find their feet in Zambia.

This visit has allowed me to get real sense of the long association between Ireland and Zambia and I hope that with the new strategy that the Embassy is rolling out, and with the active participation of the Irish community here, that further links in trade, education, tourism and culture can be made between Ireland and Zambia.
