Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
On August 2, 2015, the entire UN membership agreed upon a new agenda for Sustainable Development, with the integration of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development at its core. The agreement sets the course for the entire world to deliver a more sustainable, prosperous and peaceful future for all, in harmony with our planet; and is due to be adopted by world leaders at the UN Summit in September.

Ireland appointed to lead UN negotiations on a new Global Development Agenda
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan T.D., and the Minister of State for Development, Trade Promotion and North-South Cooperation, Seán Sherlock T.D., have warmly welcomed Ireland’s appointment by the United Nations to lead international negotiations over the coming year on a new global development agenda to succeed the Millennium Development Goals.
UN General Assembly Leaders’ week
In recognition of Ireland’s leading role on global hunger, Ireland was invited to co-host an event at UNGA 69 on Delivering Zero Hunger – Demonstrating Impact, which is a follow up to the launch of the Zero Hunger Challenge by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's in June 2012.

Post-2015 development agenda
As a further significant step towards a new development agenda to cover the period 2015 – 30, Ireland, Norway, Denmark and the other members of the open working group warmly welcomed agreement on 19 July on a set of sustainable development goals and targets. Further intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 framework are expected to get underway towards the end of this year, leading to announcement of a new global development agenda at a summit of Heads of State and Government in New York in September 2015.
Irish mission hosts a Peacekeeping Panel Event
In July, the Mission organised a well-attended panel discussion on command and control arrangements for UN peacekeeping missions. Panel speakers included the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, two major troop contributors Rwanda and Pakistan, and a former Force Commander of the UN mission in Liberia, Lt.Gen. Joseph Owonibi.
