Consulate General in Toronto operating from September 2022

Ireland’s newest diplomatic mission, the Consulate General of Ireland in Toronto begins its work in Toronto in September 2022.

The new mission will strengthen political, commercial, community, and cultural ties between Ireland and the Provinces of Ontario (except for the Ottawa region), Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Enhancing collaboration with municipal and provincial government partners will be an important part of its role.

The Consulate General is currently located in temporary offices in central Toronto, where it will work in partnership with the Toronto offices of Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and Tourism Ireland to support the growth of Ireland’s economic interests.

Ireland’s Ambassador to Canada, Eamonn Mc Kee said – “I am delighted that the new Consulate General of Ireland will be shortly operational in Toronto. I warmly welcome Consul General Janice McGann and Vice Consul General William Barrett as the newest members of Team Ireland in Canada.

Ireland and Canada enjoy excellent bilateral relations. Our links are strong and diverse, spanning centuries and a range of areas, including economic, political, culture and education. Today, we also continue to be connected by our peoples, not least through our large and diverse Irish community across Canada. The Consulate General in Toronto will have a key role to play in promoting Irish interests in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Opening up this new Mission is part of the “Global Ireland” initiative for Ireland to double its impact and influence in the world by 2025. Widening and deepening our unique relationship with Canada is a key part of this ambitious goal.

I would like to thank the Canadian Government for their support with the establishment of our new diplomatic mission in Toronto and wish my new colleagues well as they begin their work.”

The new mission will be led by Consul General Janice McGann, who says – “I am very honoured and privileged to be appointed as Ireland’s first Consul General in Toronto.

Building on the work of the Irish Embassy in Ottawa, and in close cooperation with Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and Tourism Ireland in Toronto, the Consulate General team will work to promote Irish interests across Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

In the Consulate, I am delighted to be joined by Vice Consul, William Barret. We are really looking forward to getting to know the Irish community and friends of Ireland across the region in the coming months.”

The Irish Embassy in Ottawa will continue to provide most consular services to Irish citizens in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, including passport and visa services, to Irish citizens. Please see the Embassy Ottawa website for more information. While in its temporary premises, the new Consulate General will not provide direct consular services to the public.
