Reading: Glen Patterson will read from his recent novels at the Shakespeare & Co. Bookshop

As part of the 2014 EFACIS Irish Itinerary, funded by Culture Ireland, Glenn Patterson will read from his recent novels (The Rest Just Follows, The Mill For Grinding Old People Young) and will talk about the city of Belfast, which has for 25 years been the setting and inspiration for his fiction.

The book reading will take place at 19.30 on Friday, 12 December, at the Shakespeare & Co. Bookshop, Sterngasse 2, 1010 Vienna. All welcome!

Book Launch & Exhibition: “Fighting for Republican Spain 1936-38: Frank Ryan and the Volunteers from Limerick in the International Brigades”

The Embassy will launch this new book by Dr Barry McLoughlin, lecturer in Irish History and Contemporary history at the University of Vienna, on Thursday 27 November. All are welcome to join at 18.30 at the Institut für Geschichte, Stiege 8, Hauptgebäude, Universität Wien.

The launch of the book will also be marked by an exhibition on the theme, which will remain on display at the Institut für Geschichte until 17 December.

Irish Business Network Event at the Vienna Expat Centre: Property Market in Vienna

The Irish Business Network with the kind support of the Vienna Business Agency will host an information evening on the Property Market in Vienna at the Vienna Expat Centre.

This will include market trend analysis and advice from experts on buying and selling property, avoiding pitfalls and information on the property market in general. The experts will also be available for a Q&A session to answer your questions and share experience.

Concert: Mary McPartlan, Padraic Keane & Aidan Brennan perform at the Centre for Irish Studies

As part of the 2014 EFACIS Irish Itinerary, funded by Culture Ireland, this organic Irish trio of uilleann piper Padraic Keane, contemporary traditional singer Mary Mc Partlan and guitarist Aidan Brennan will present a mix of great traditional Irish tunes with songs that come from many different aspects of Irish history.

Embassy of Ireland / Enterprise Ireland : “Knowledge Sharing and e-Learning Forum” with Intuition

Ambassador Whelan addressed the opening of an Embassy / Enterprise Ireland “Knowledge Sharing and e-Learning Forum” at the Embassy Vienna on 13 November. The Forum showcased the Irish company “Intuition”, which was founded in Dublin and which now operates in several international locations.

Opening of Photography Exhibition: “Ireland: The Emerald Isle in Black & White”

The Embassy of Ireland opened an exhibition of photographs by Ina Forstinger and Gerald Berghammer on 11 November 2014. The photographs will be exhibited at the former Adi Mayer Film Studios (Lindengasse 65) until 23 November and will be on further display for the month of December at the CIMMIC Photography Gallery (Burggasse 43-45).

New Irish Studies Agreement Signed with University of Vienna

Ambassador Mary Whelan and Prof. Dr Heinz Fassmann, Vice-Rector for International Relations at the University of Vienna, signed a new Irish Studies Agreement for the period 2014-2016. The Agreement provides for a visiting Irish professorship as well as a wide range of public lectures, readings and other events aimed at the wider promotion of Irish literature and culture in Austria. Its renewal was welcomed by President Michael D. Higgins at a dinner hosted on the occasion of the visit of the Federal President of Austria to Ireland.

2014 Vienna Feis

On 11 October, the Embassy of Ireland was honoured to open the 2014 Vienna Feis, hosted this year by the Rafter School of Irish Dance in Vienna. This wonderful celebration of Irish dance in Vienna, which attracted over 300 Irish dancers from all over Europe, took place at the Sporthalle Brigittenau, Hopsagasse 7, 1200 Wien.

President Fischer Visits Ireland

The Federal President of the Republic of Austria, H.E. Dr Heinz Fischer and Ms Margit Fischer visited Ireland from 6-8 October. An official dinner was held in their honour by President Michael D. Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin. President Fischer also planted an Irish oak tree in the garden of the Áras to mark his visit.

During the visit, President Fischer and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD, opened an Irish Austrian Business Forum in Dublin to highlight business opportunities in both countries.

President Fisher also met the Taoiseach, the Ceann Comhairle and Cathaoirleach of the Seanad. He also undertook a cultural programme including a visit to Trinity College, Marsh’s Library, and the National Gallery.

DJ Donal Dineen: Highlight of the Lange Nacht der Museen in Salzburg

With support from the Embassy of Ireland and from Tourism Ireland, Irish DJ Donal Dineen proved a star attraction during the Lange Nacht der Museen in Salzburg. Playing from 11pm to late, the Irish DJ star ensured that visitors to the Salzburger Kunstverein danced into the early hours!

Bea McMahon’s “Cover” Opens at the Salzburger Kunstverein

With support from the Arts Council of Ireland and Culture Ireland, the Salzburger Kunstverein is proud to present the first exhibition of Irish artist Bea McMahon in Austria. Bea McMahon, born 1972 in Dublin, lives and works in Amsterdam. The exhibition opened on 3 October 2014 and will run until 30 November 2014.
