Lost or stolen passports

Learn more about what you should do if your passport is lost or stolen in Austria, whether you live here or are on holiday.

If you are on holidays...

1. Report the theft/loss

If your passport has been stolen, you must make a report to the nearest Police Station.

If you have lost your passport, you must report it to the nearest Magistrate.

In both instances, it is important to bear in mind that English language interpreters are not always available at short notice: it may be advisable to bring a German-speaking person with you.

Important: You must retain the original copy of your statement to the Police or Magistrat and submit it with your application for an alternative travel document.

2. Contact the Embassy to make arrangements for an alternative travel document.

Minimum requirements to apply for an alternative travel document:

  • Your original police/magistrate report
  • Two passport photographs
  • Proof of your flight home
  • Evidence of your identity/citizenship. If you do not have alternative photo identification with you in Austria, you will need to ask somebody to bring your original long form birth certificate (and civil marriage certificate in the case of a married woman whose passport name is in her married surname), or an old cancelled passport, to a Garda Station in Ireland and fax a copy to the Embassy
  • The relevant fee
  • Depending on your situation, we may require additional evidence in support of your application, including a fully witnessed application form, and additional proof of name and address

Please bear in mind this service is not available outside of office hours except in case of emergency. You may need to arrange a new flight to allow you time to obtain a travel document.

3. If you are in an emergency situation requiring urgent travel (such as the death or serious illness of a family member)

Please dial the Embassy: +43 (0)1 715 4246. A recorded message will provide the telephone number of the Duty Officer in Vienna, which can be called in case of a genuine consular emergency that cannot wait until office hours.

If you are Resident in Austria...

1. Report the theft/Loss

If your passport has been stolen, you must make a report to the nearest Police Station.

2. Apply for a replacement passport at the Embassy in Vienna

Follow the regular application process as set out in Applying for a Passport Section.

Additionally, you will need to submit an original copy of your statement of loss/theft as made to the Police/Magistrate along with your application.

With a view to preventing identity theft and the circulation of falsified passports, there are additional safeguards that may be invoked for adults seeking to replace a lost or stolen passport. If your passport has been lost or stolen, you may also be asked to supply the following documents:

  • Evidence of entitlement to Irish citizenship, where applicable
  • Documentary evidence to show use of name, e.g. payslips; records of unemployment or disability payment; bank statement; college registration etc.; and
  • Evidence of residency at the application address, e.g. utility bills; official correspondence from public or private sector etc.
