Colombian-Irish Relations

Find out about the relationship between Ireland and Colombia

Official diplomatic relations between our two nations began in 1999. Our history goes back further to Colombia’s fight for independence when more than one thousand Irish people travelled to Latin America to assist Simon Bolivar. The descendants of these volunteers still live in Colombia today.

Former Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamon Gilmore, was appointed as European Union Special Envoy for the Colombian Peace Process in October 2015. President Michael D. Higgins visited Colombia in February 2017. Both Ireland and Colombia announced the opening of Embassies in each other's countries in 2018.
