Ambassador O’Neill visit to work of Franciscan Missionary sisters in Kariobangi slum Nairobi

Ambassador O’Neill visited the work of the Franciscan Missionaries in Kariobangi, Nairobi on 29th October 2015. The Franciscan sisters established a range of social services (including schools, health clinics, out of school training) for the poorest communities living in the slums in Nairobi.

One of the Franciscan nuns based in Kariobangi, Sr Dr Miriam Duggan from Limerick, is one of the recipients of the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad for 2015. Sr. Dr Duggan has been recognised for her work in Africa, particularly in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention.

The Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad provides recognition by the Irish State for persons living abroad (primarily Irish citizens, those entitled to Irish citizenship and those of Irish descent), who have given sustained and distinguished service to Ireland.
