Elections in Kenya

On the 8th August 2017 Kenya will hold Elections for the Presidency, National Parliament, County Assemblies and Governor Positions. These elections are held every 5 years.

Historically elections in Kenya are associated with a build-up of tension and outbreaks of violence. Citizens are advised to exercise caution in the period before, during and after the election. Large public gatherings should be avoided and unnecessary journeys should not be taken.

The Embassy suggests that the following precautions should be taken as a means of personal preparation:

  • Keep a small reserve of cash on hand;
  • Buy and keep a reserve of phone credit and ensure mobile phones are charged;
  • Ensure First Aid Kits are adequately stocked;
  • Maintain a reserve of dry food and drinking water to last 7 days;
  • Maintain an adequate supply of prescription medication;
  • Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel;
  • Ensure domestic generators are fully serviced and fuelled;
  • Keep a list of contact numbers of hospitals and police – keep in touch with friends and neighbours;
  • Centralise important documents such as passports, certificates, property deeds so they are easily accessible;
  • Prepare a Grab Bag with essential supplies and keep it to hand;
  • Avoid driving after dark;
  • Stay away from rallies or crowded areas.
