Irish Culture

The Embassy organises a number of cultural events in our countries of accreditation. Contact Us for further information.

The people of Ireland, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal all share a great love of writers and poets as well as music, song and dance. 2015 in Ireland sees a year-long celebration of the life and works of the poet WB Yeats.

The 2015 Embassy St. Patrick's Day Abuja reception featured a recital by poet Dike Chukwumerije of Lament of the Masks, the 1965 poem which the deceased poet Christopher Okigbo dedicated to Yeats. WB Yeats' 1919 poem The Second Coming inspired Things Fall Apart, the acclaimed first novel of Chinua Achebe, also now sadly deceased. Though they have gone, we remember and celebrate their work.
