How quickly can I get my passport?

Information for Spanish residents on passport turnaround times

The current standard processing time for passport renewals is approximately 7 weeks. We are currently experiencing a very high volume of applications from first-time applicants, therefore we are advising that these may take up to three months to process.

A temporary passport can be issued on the day only in the case of an emergency situation (the death or serious illness of a family member).

In all other circumstances, you will have to wait a minimum of five working days to get a temporary passport. Valid proof of confirmed travel (e.g. airline ticket/email) must be presented in order for any application to be processed sooner than the standard turnaround. You may incur an additional fee. Please contact us immediately if you require a passport urgently.

We also provide assistance if you are on holiday in Spain and your passport has been lost or stolen

If you are planning on travelling over the Christmas period but need to renew your passport first, we would urge you to do so as a matter of urgency. Due to the volume of applications received on the run up to Christmas at the Embassy in Madrid and the Passport Offices in Ireland, processing times may increase. It is therefore advisable to submit your completed application as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
