How quickly can I get my passport?

Information for Spanish residents on passport turnaround times

The current standard processing time for passport renewals (paper applications) is approximately 8 weeks and 9 weeks for first-time applicants. Remember that adults can renew their passports online – a service which has a standard processing time of only two weeks plus postage (see for more details). It is important to bear in mind that these turnaround times only apply to applications that are correctly filled out and accompanied by the relevant supporting documentation.

A temporary passport can be issued on the day only in the case of an emergency situation (the death or serious illness of a family member). We also provide assistance if you are on holiday in Spain and your passport has been lost or stolen. Please contact us (Passport Queries) immediately if you require a passport urgently.

If you are planning on travelling over the Christmas period but need to renew your passport first, we would urge you to do so as a matter of urgency. Due to the volume of applications received on the run up to Christmas at the Embassy in Madrid and the Passport Offices in Ireland, processing times may increase. It is therefore advisable to submit your completed application as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
