What to do if I find a passport I'd reported lost/stolen?

Once a passport has been reported lost or stolen to the police, the information is communicated to Interpol within 24 hours.

As the information is communicated to Interpol, you should never attempt to travel on a passport that has been reported lost or stolen. You run the risk of being stopped at border crossings as Interpol maintains a record of all reports of lost or stolen passports.

If living in Tanzania or the Embassy's countries of secondary accreditation, you should return the passport in person or by a reputable courier to the Embassy.
