How to Apply for a Passport

Apply Online

Irish citizens who have previously held an Irish Passport can now apply for their Passport Book and/or Card online.

You cannot apply online if you have already submitted a paper application.

If you are resident outside Ireland and do not qualify or wish to use the online system, you need to use an APS2 application form.

The Embassy of Ireland in Washington DC accepts passport applications from Irish citizens resident in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia or the Caribbean Islands.

If you do not qualify for or wish to use the online system, you need to use an APS2 application form.

It is available in Irish (APS2G) and in English (APS2E).

APS2 forms are available:

  • By calling to the Consulate during office hours
  • Contacting us (include your name and full address in the form) and we will post you the forms

Please note that USD fees for passports are regularly updated to keep in line with the Euro fees charged by the Passport Office in Ireland. Please also note that from 11th April 2011, fees also apply to persons aged 65 and over.

Irish Passport Fee Schedule (effective March 30, 2017)

Standard 34 page passport valid for 10 years (18 years and over) $105
Large 66 page passport valid for 10 years, for persons who travel frequently $135
Minor, age 0-17 years 34 page passport valid for 5 years $50
Additional Fees For the issue of an Emergency Passport outside normal Embassy hours $90

U.S. dollars: Money Order, Draft or Certified Bank check in the exact amount only made payable to “Department of Foreign Affairs - Ireland”

CASH/CREDIT CARDS / PERSONAL CHECKS NOT ACCEPTED

Enter your full mailing address (with zip code) in Section 4.  P.O. Box addresses cannot be used for courier service.

Choose an APPROVED WITNESS from the list of acceptable professions in Section 7 or 9 of the form. Witness should also sign reverse of photographs.  If witness is a Bank Manager/Asst. Manager or School Principal, enter name of bank or school.  The witness must stamp/seal the white box on the right.  If witness does not have a stamp/seal, please attach a business card. NOTARIES are also acceptable as a witness.

Original documents must be accompanied by a PHOTOCOPYof the document. Please note that all Passports applications are processed in Dublin.

Naturalised Citizens:  Enclose copy of: FORM 14 Declaration of Intention to retain Irish Citizenship by a Naturalised Irish Citizen Residing outside Ireland. Not applicable if renewing passport.

US. REGULATIONS: U.S. law requires U.S. passport holders to present a valid U.S. passport when entering and leaving the United States. 

Where to apply

For residents of Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia or the Caribbean Islands, you will lodge your passport application at the Embassy of Ireland, Washington DC.

The Passport Office at the Embassy of Ireland Washington D.C. is open Monday to Friday from 09.00 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 16.00.

You can lodge your application in person at the Embassy from Monday to Friday between these hours. Alternatively you can post your application to:

If you decide to post your application, we strongly recommend you use registered mail or a reputable courier service. The Embassy cannot be held responsible for applications or documents lost in transit.

For residents of other states, you are required to submit your passport application to the relevant Consulate, as indicated below.
