Ambassador's Welcome

AMB PAT KELLY

I am delighted to welcome you to the new website of the Irish Embassy in Hungary. I hope you will find it useful as a means of keeping in touch with Ireland or Irish-related events in Hungary.

The historical and cultural links between Ireland and Hungary re many and date back to the Middle Ages. Having just taken up duty here as Ambassador, I am delighted to see the strong level of interest in Irish culture, and particularly our renowned literary tradition, which exists among Hungarians. James Joyce, of course, is responsible for the fact that Leopold Bloom's father hailed from Szombathely in western Hungary.

Nowadays, Ireland and Hungary are strong partners within the European Union. It was during our EU presidency in 2004 that Hungary became an EU member. Many thousands of Hungarians have subsequently travelled to Ireland to find work and are making an important contribution to the Irish economy and society.

The economic and trade links are healthy and growing, with total annual trade amounting to well over €1 billion, according to the most recent statistics. The efforts to promote greater trade are only reinforced by Enterprise Ireland's presence here within Ireland House, Budapest.

As Ambassador, I hope to do all I can to advance further the close and friendly relations existing between our two countries and to enable us to work more closely together in pursuing our many common interests, particularly within the framework of the European Union.

The Embassy and I are here to assist in any way we can the growing resident Irish community in Hungary as well as all those in Ireland interested in visiting or doing business with Hungary. We would welcome any suggestions you may have to help improve our overall level of service. You can also follow us on Facebook.

With my best wishes

Pat Kelly
Ambassador

Teachtaireacht Fáilte ón Ambasadóir

Do chéad fáilte chuig suíomh gréasáin nua Ambasáid na hÉireann san Ungáir. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh tú tairbhe as an suíomh chun a bheith i dteagmháil le hÉirinn nó le himeachtaí Éireannacha san Ungáir.

Is mór an ceangal staire agus cultúir atá idir Éire agus an Ungáir, agus síneann an ceangal sin siar chomh fada leis na Meánaoiseanna. Anois, agus mé díreach tar éis dul i mbun dualgais anseo mar Ambasadóir, tá mé thar a bheith sásta a fheiceáil go bhfuil an oiread spéise ag muintir na hUngáire i gcultúr na hÉireann, agus go háirithe sa traidisiún liteartha iomráiteach dár gcuid. Is a bhuíochas le James Joyce, ar ndóigh, gurb as Szombathely in iarthar na hUngáire d'athair Leopold Bloom.

Tá Éire agus an Ungáir ina gcomhpháirtithe láidre san Aontas Eorpach sa lá atá inniu ann. Ba le linn ár n-uachtaránachta ar an AE in 2004 a ghlac an Ungáir ballraíocht san AE. Ó shin i leith, tá na mílte duine de mhuintir na hUngáire tar éis taisteal go hÉirinn ag lorg oibre, agus tá cion tábhachtach á dhéanamh acu ar son gheilleagar agus sochaí na hÉireann.

Tá borradh faoi na naisc gheilleagracha agus thrádála, agus is fiú go maith os cionn €1 billiún an trádáil iomlán eadrainn in aghaidh na bliana, de réir na staitisticí is déanaí. Cuirtear treise leis na hiarrachtaí an trádáil a chur chun cinn toisc go bhfuil Fiontraíocht Éireann inár gcuideachta anseo in Áras na hÉireann i mBúdaipeist.

I mo cháil mar Ambasadóir, tá súil agam gach is féidir liom a dhéanamh chun an dlúthchairdeas idir an dá thír seo againne a chothú a thuilleadh, agus chun a chur ar ár gcumas dúinn a bheith ag obair níos dlúithe le chéile ar mhaithe leis na leasanna atá againn araon, go háirithe faoi chuimsiú chreat an Aontais Eorpaigh.

Is ann don Ambasáid agus dom féin anseo chun cúnamh ar bith is féidir linn a thabhairt don phobal Éireannach san Ungáir, pobal atá ag dul i méid, mar aon leo siúd go léir in Éirinn ar mhaith leo cuairt a thabhairt ar an Ungáir nó dul i mbun gnó léi. Cuirfimid fáilte roimh aon mholtaí uait i dtaobh feabhas a chur ar an tseirbhís uainn. Is féidir leat muid a leanúint ar Facebook freisin.

Le gach dea-ghuí,

Pat Kelly
Ambasadóir
