Ireland-Hungary Relations

Ireland and Hungary flags

Diplomatic relations were established on a non-resident basis in 1974. Hungary opened an Embassy in Dublin in 1991 and Ireland opened an Embassy in Budapest in 1995.

Hungary acceded to the EU on 1 May 2004 under the Irish Presidency and completed its first EU Presidency in the first semester of 2011.

There is a high level of interest in Ireland and in Irish culture in Hungary. Significant numbers of Irish third-level students pursue their studies in Hungary, principally in veterinary science and medicine.
