Passport Applications: Allow at least Eight Weeks’ Turnaround Time

All Irish passports are produced by the Passport Office in Dublin. Due to unprecedented demand on Irish passport services internationally, passport applications are currently taking a minimum of eight weeks to be processed and returned to us at the Consulate. Please allow at least eight weeks for your new passport to be sent to you.

Please note also that if your passport application is incomplete, if it is a first-time passport application, or if it is an application on behalf of a child (under 18 years of age), it may take longer than eight weeks to process due to the need for additional checking, clarification and correspondence.

Where is my passport application right now?
When the Consulate receives your passport application, we check it to make sure that all the documentation and photographs are correct. We will contact you if anything is missing or incorrect. Once your application is complete and has been fully checked, it is forwarded to the Passport Office in Dublin for processing and production. This is currently taking a minimum of eight weeks.

The Passport Office in Dublin operates a tracking service for passport applications. Please note that the current demand for passport services means that it can take several weeks for passport applications to move from one stage of processing to the next. If you have not received your passport after eight weeks, please contact the Consulate directly.

I’m leaving the US very soon and need a passport urgently. What should I do?
If your travel is imminent, we may be able to provide you with a temporary passport or emergency travel document to enable you to depart the US. You will need to provide us with a copy of your confirmed flight booking. Emergency travel documents are valid for one journey only and can be provided to those who are visiting the United States and who need a document to return home. Temporary passports can be provided to those whose travel involves more than one destination. It is important to note that the temporary passport booklets that we issue are not biometric, and so they cannot be used for re-entry into the United States without a visa. If you wish to enter the US using a temporary passport, you will either need to obtain a visa from the US Embassy in your destination country in advance of your return, or to be in possession of a valid United States permanent resident card (“green card”).

If your travel is more than three weeks away, you may also have the option of applying for a “fast-track” (expedited) passport service. An additional fee applies for this service. Please note that the expedited service is only available to those who are renewing their Irish passports – we cannot offer this facility to first-time passport applicants or to those under 18 years of age.
