Irish Lives: the Cinema of Alan Gilsenan

Irish Lives: the Cinema of Alan Gilsenan

Vidas Irlandesas - Irish Film Season at Cinemateca Brasileira 15-18 August

The Consulate General of Ireland in São Paulo are delighted to be supporting the upcoming Irish film season, Irish Lives - the Cinema of Alan Gilsenan, at the Cinemateca Brasileira from 15-18 August.

The festival will feature films by award-winning Irish writer, filmmaker and theatre director Alan Gilsensan about the lives of Irish writers and artists such as WB Yeats, Tom Murphy, Paul Durcan, Liam Clancy and Sean Scully of historical figures such as Roger Casement, Eliza Lynch and Patrick Pearse, and renowned psychiatrist Ivor Browne.

Alan Gilsenan has directed over thirty films for television and film, including the biographies of this show: "The Ghost of Roger Casement" (2002); "Sing Forever" (2003); "Paul Durcan: The Dark School, 1944-1971" (2007); "The Yellow Bittern: The Life of Liam Clancy" (2008); "The damn screen" (2009); "Pearse's Writings" (2010); "Eliza Lynch: Queen of Paraguay" (2013); "W. B. Yeats: A Vision" (2014); and "Meetings with Ivor" (2017).

The festival explores the possibilities for cinema to represent on-screen biographies, with alternative perspectives to those of historical writings and conventional biographies in a creative and questioning manner.

The festival will be launched on August 15 and will include the screening of the film "WB Yeats: A Vision", which will be presented by the filmmaker. The book "Irish Lives: the Cinema of Alan Gilsenan in context" ( PPGI / UFSC and Insular, 2019),  edited by Beatriz Kopschitz Bastos and José Roberto O'Shea will also be launched.

The festival was curated and organized by Beatriz Kopschitz Bastos and Lance Pettitt in collaboration of Ketlyn Mara Rosa and support from the Irish Embassy and Consulate in Brazil. All screenings will feature director Alan Gilsenan.

All programming has free admission. Tickets will be distributed at the box office one hour before each session, subject to availability.
