On the last Sunday of August, the Great Irish Famine Commemoration Committee held their annual commemoration event at the Australian Monument to the Great Irish Famine at Hyde Park Barracks.

The Monument commemorates the over 4,000 young Irish women who travelled to Australia as part of organised immigration schemes during the Famine years. 400 of their names, representing all 32 counties, are depicted on the memorial’s glass. The Monument was unveiled on 28 August 1999.
