Message from Ambassador Madigan

Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Ireland to the Holy See.

I would like to welcome visitors to the home page of the Embassy of Ireland to the Holy See. I think it is fair to say that the role of this Embassy is quite unique within Ireland's diplomatic network. The Holy See is at the centre of the Catholic Church, a community of some 1.3 billion people worldwide and has a network of over 110 diplomatic offices in addition to the presence of the Church in communities almost everywhere in the world, including in many situations of conflict. This gives the Holy See sources of information and a view on global developments different to any other.

Ireland and the Holy See share a belief in the importance of the multilateral system.  Our long-standing relationship incorporates many global issues of mutual interest, including human rights, sustainable development, eradicating hunger, climate change, disarmament, migration and human trafficking, freedom of religion or belief, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Ireland’s foreign policy, as set out in The Global Island: Ireland’s Foreign Policy for a Changing World, is guided by the ideals of peace and friendly co-operation, founded on international justice and morality.  Since formally presenting my credentials to Pope Francis in November 2014, I have worked to ensure that Ireland and the Holy See share information and perspectives on some of these common global challenges so that both of us may contribute to their resolution more effectively.

I welcome all suggestions and feedback for this website and the wider work of the Embassy.

Thank you for your visit

Fáilte chuig suíomh gréasáin Ambasáid na hÉireann sa Suí Naofa.

Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh chuairteoirí chuig leathanach baile Ambasáid na hÉireann sa Suí Naofa. D'fhéadfaí a rá gur deimhin go bhfuil ról ar leith ag an Ambasáid seo i líonra taidhleoireachta na hÉireann. Is é an Suí Naofa croílár na hEaglaise Caitlicí, pobal ina bhfuil timpeall is 1.3 billiún duine ar fud an domhain agus ag a bhfuil líonra de os cionn 110 gcinn d'oifigí taidhleoireachta mar aon le láithreacht na hEaglaise i bpobail i mbeagnach gach cearn den domhan, lena n-áirítear a lán áiteanna ina bhfuil coinbhleachtaí ar bun. Fágann an méid sin go bhfuil foinsí eolais ar leith ag an Suí Naofa, mar aon le léargas ar leith ar an méid atá ag tarlú ar domhan.

Creideann Éire agus an Suí Naofa araon sa tábhacht a bhaineann leis an gcóras iltaobhach. Is iomaí saincheist dhomhanda is ábhar spéise againn araon atá cuimsithe sa chaidreamh fadbhunaithe eadrainn, lena n-áirítear cearta an duine, forbairt inbhuanaithe, an t-ocras a dhíothú, athrú aeráide, dí-armáil, imirce agus gáinneáil ar dhaoine, saoirse reiligiúin nó creidimh, agus réiteach síochánta ar choinbhleachtaí.

Tá beartas eachtrach na hÉireann, mar atá leagtha amach sa cháipéis An tOileán Domhanda: Beartas Eachtrach na hÉireann maidir le Domhan atá ag Athrú, á threorú ag idéil na síochána agus an chomhair chairdiúil, agus iadsan bunaithe ar cheartas agus moráltacht idirnáisiúnta. Ón uair a chuir mé mo chuid dintiúr faoi bhráid an Phápa Proinsias go foirmiúil i mí na Samhna 2014, tá mé i mbun oibre lena chinntiú go gcomhroinneann Éire agus an Suí Naofa faisnéis agus léargais ar roinnt de na dúshláin dhomhanda sin atá le sárú againn araon, ionas gur féidir linn cuidiú iad a réiteach ar shlí níos éifeachtaí.

Cuirim fáilte roimh gach moladh agus aiseolas i leith an tsuímh gréasáin seo i dtaobh obair níos leithne na hAmbasáide.

Go raibh maith agat as cuairt a thabhairt orainn.

Emma Madigan, Ambasadóir na hÉireann
