The Embassy of Ireland, Abu Dhabi, and VOX Cinemas, in cooperation with the Irish Film Institute, are delighted and excited to present the inaugural "Ireland on Screen in the UAE" film programme showcasing some of the best of Irish film to audiences in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

This is a unique opportunity for UAE audiences to discover the sights and sounds of Ireland, as well as the creativity of Irish storytelling and film-making through a line-up of diverse Irish films.

Embracing and celebrating Ireland’s National Day, St. Patrick’s Day, on March 17th, the event will run over 3 days from March 18-20 in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Táimid thar a bheith sásta go mbeidh taibhiú Arracht sa Mheánoirthear, príomhscannán nua Gaeilge, san áireamh sa chlár, a bheidh le feiceáil den chéad uair in Éirinn níos déanaí an mhí seo.

We are particularly pleased that the programme will include the Middle East Premiere of Arracht, a new Irish language feature film, which will be premiered in Ireland later this month.

In rural Ireland in the 1960s, Frances (Hazel Doupe) is a young Traveller who has coped with tragedy from an early age. When her father Michael (Dara Devaney) is imprisoned, Frances learns to fend for herself and her brother, developing a love of boxing and a devotion to Muhammad Ali inherited from her father.

Their peaceful life in the camp on the picturesque West Cork coast is disrupted when Michael returns from prison, gathers his children and takes to the road.

Arracht

Arracht tells the story of Colmán Sharkey, a fisherman, a father, a husband, living on the wild shores of Connemara in 1845 as The Great Hunger descends. As land taxes rise and crops rot Colmán confronts his Landlord, the night ends in deadly violence and Colmán is forced to go on the run, hunted for crimes he did not commit. As the years pass in solitude, Colmán returns to the mainland and encounters a young girl, Kitty and a life-saving friendship develops.


Arracht is a bracingly authentic and tender story about finding hope when all else is lost.

The Drummer and The Keeper

When he meets goalkeeper Christopher (Jacob McCarthy), a 17-year-old with Asperger’s Syndrome, a fraught relationship gradually develops into a firm friendship as each learns to respect the other’s foibles.
