Cast a cold eye - Olha Friamente

The Irish Association of Portugal in association with the Faculdade de Belas-Artes, Universidade de Lisboa with the support of the Embassy of Ireland and Fundação D. Luis I, presented an art exhibition and evening to make the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Irish poet, W.B. Yeats at Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães Cascais.

Council of Europe’s 2014 North-South Prize

1 July 2015

The Council of Europe’s 2014 North-South Prize will be awarded to Irish citizen, Sister Doctor Maura Lynch, an Irish doctor-surgeon and obstetrician, for her work on behalf of the poor and vulnerable people in South Saharan Africa, especially her ground-breaking work with women whose lives have been devastated by obstetric fistula. Ambassador Anne Webster nominated Sister Doctor Lynch for this prestigious award.

Bloomsday Celebration

Over the years, the Bloomsday celebration event, hosted at the Irish Residence by the Ambassador in partnership with the Irish Association, has become a popular fixture on Lisbon’s culture calendar.

As you might expect, the Bloomsday celebration focuses on James Joyce’s Ulysses and other Joycean works. Performances include vignettes by the acclaimed Lisbon Players, readings of Joyce’s prose and poetry as well as music and songs of Ireland.
Guests are invited to attire themselves in the elegant trappings of the Edwardian era - why not don a boater!

Blue Week Ministerial Meeting

5 - 6 June 2015

In June 2015, Portugal will host the Blue Week, a platform to focus States’ concerns and strategic interest in all aspects of the oceans that surround us. The Blue Week has three dimensions: business dynamics, strategic thinking and political discussion. The ancient sea-faring Portugal of the Discoveries is a logical host to promote this year’s discussion and action on the ocean.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr Simon Coveney TD, will represent Ireland.

“Wild Atlantic Ways” - An Evening of Storytelling

Keeping the tradition of the Seanachai alive, Niall de Búrca, one of Ireland’s most renowned storytellers, will captivate his audience with stories linking Irish and Portuguese cultures, based on the significance of the Atlantic Ocean to both countries.

Niall de Búrca, originally from Galway, has featured in theatre, radio and at many festivals including Féile Earraai, the CS Lewis Festival, and The National Children’s Book Festival. He can keep an audience of any age enraptured with tales that range from the hilarious through to the macabre and on to the downright absurd, all told with great charm, humour and impeccable timing.

During his visit to Lisbon, Niall will also perform at a number of international schools.

This event is sponsored by the Irish Association and Ambassador Webster will host a welcome reception.

Launch of Visual Arts Competition based on the poetry of W.B. Yeats

The Embassy and the Irish Society co-presented an evening to launch the Visual Arts Exhibition and Competition based on Yeats’ poetry, at the Auditorium of the Lisbon Arts Faculty “Faculdade de Belas-Artes”. The intention of this competition is to broaden interest in Yeats beyond the literary into the visual arts. On the evening, the sacred written word was not forgotten, as several Yeatsian scholars spoke on the multifaceted nature of Yeat’s philosophy and writings.

Save the Date - The exhibition will be shown on our Yeats Day celebration on 15 October 2015.

This year’s Embassy of Ireland Lecture Series is held sequentially at the University of Minho, the University of Oporto and the University of Lisbon.

“The Theatricality of W.B.Yeats – 8 April 2015
Professor Hedwig Schwall, Director of the Leuven Centre for Irish Studies

An all-day event on 8 April in the Faculty of Letters in Braga, University of Minho, entitled “A Terrible Beauty is Born” celebrated the 150th Anniversary of William Butler Yeats. Apart from the lecture, the program included a presentation by Ambassador Webster, workshops, poetry readings and students panels, as well as the performance “Where All the Ladders Start” by Mick Greer (University of Lisbon) and the Balloonatics Theatre Company.

‘The Art of Grief” Irish Women Poets. Explorations of Loss and Healing“.

This lecture, which will be held in the Oporto and Lisbon Universities examines the theme of loss in the work of some of the most senior living Irish women poets such as Eavan Boland, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Medbh McGuckian, Paula Meehan, Moya Cannon and Kerry Hardie, who followed on from and were challenged by W.B Yeats.

Both Lectures will be addressed by Ambassador Anne Webster.

Global Greening 2015

From 16-21st March, three iconic monuments in the Lisbon area lit the night skies with their sparkling emerald cloaks of light. Yes, Lisbon again joined 125 other famous international sites as part of Tourism Ireland’s “Global Greening” Campaign.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in Lisbon

Ambassador Anne Webster welcomed the Irish community, representatives of the Portuguese Government and State bodies, the diplomatic corps, and contacts in the business, academic and media sectors to the annual St Patrick’s Day reception at the Residence. The evening was primarily a celebration of our National Day and of all things Irish. And, in addition, the reception afforded a great opportunity to showcase Irish culture, music, food and tourism. Lisbon-based cellist Peter Flanagan gave an outstanding performance of Irish classical and traditional music.

The 13th consecutive celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Lisbon by the Irish Association attracted record attendance by the Irish, Portuguese and international community . A troupe of Irish dancers, the Celtic Storm, who had travelled from Ireland, and the Melting Pot, a Lisbon based Irish band, soon had all feet on deck! The Celtic Storm dancers also performed in local schools.
