When should I apply for a new passport?

We strongly recommend that you do not make travel plans without a valid passport. You should allow at least 6 - 8 weeks for the processing of your passport application.

You do not need to wait until your current passport has expired to apply for a new one.

In EU countries you can travel using your passport up to the date of expiry but keep in mind that some non-EU destinations require six months validity on your passport to gain entry. Check with the Embassy of the country you intend to travel to.

Sign up to the Passport Reminder Service, where we send you an email informing you that your passport will expire in 3 months.

Online Applicants:

Please be advised that the postage time for passports to Canada is approximately 3-5 weeks from the time the passport is dispatched. We advise all applicants to allow sufficient time for their passport to arrive and to refrain from booking travel without a valid passport.
