駐日アイルランド大使館は、6月2日から15日までの日程で、東京・角川シネマ有楽町にて「アイルランド映画祭2023」を開催する運びとなりました。国際的な舞台にてアイルランド映画が大きな成功を収めていることを踏まえ、本映画祭ではご来場の皆様を魅了する選りすぐりの9作品を上映いたします。

アイルランド映画は世界的に高い評価を得ており、本映画祭はアイルランドの俳優、監督、映画制作者の多様な才能を日本の皆様にご紹介する機会となります。2023年のアカデミー賞で主要8部門9ノミネートを果たした『イニシェリン島の精霊』に代表される最近の好成績をもって、アイルランドは国際映画産業における地位を確立しました。

このたびは、アイルランド映画の成長を祝い、支援するため、当館はアイルランド映画協会、マーメイドフィルムおよびVALERIAのご協力を得て、アイルランドが誇る映画制作者たちの優れた創造力とストーリーテリングの才能を実証する新旧の名作を上映いたします。

本映画祭では、『シング・ストリート　未来へのうた』や『ベルファスト』といった近年の作品から、『ザ・コミットメンツ』などの往年の名作まで、この数十年で成功を収めたアイルランド映画をご紹介してまいります。 ジョン・フォード監督が手がけた1950 年代を代表する映画『静かなる男』から、2023年のアカデミー賞で短編実写映画賞を受賞したハートウォーミング・コメディ『アイリッシュ・グッドバイ』まで、ご来場の皆様には、アイルランドのストーリーテリングの多様性を存分にお楽しみいただけます。 また、世界を魅了する伝統的なアイリッシュダンスを取り上げたドキュメンタリー映画『ステップス・オブ・フリーダム』や、初めて女性が監督を務めたアイルランドの長編映画で1959年の名作『もうひとつの楽園』を含む3作品が本邦初公開を飾ります。さらに、世界的に名高いアイルランドのアニメーションスタジオ「カートゥーン・サルーン」が手がけた受賞歴のあるアニメーション映画『ソング・オブ・ザ・シー　海のうた』の上映を通し、隆盛を極めるアイルランドのアニメーション映画部門もご紹介いたします。

一部の作品の上映後には、ゲストをお招きし、トークイベント・質疑応答を行います。より多くの方がご都合に合わせてお好きな作品をご鑑賞いただけるよう、ほぼすべての作品を午前・午後に1回ずつ上映いたします。

本映画祭の開催にあたり、駐日アイルランド大使デミアン・コールは次のように述べています。

『アイリッシュ・グッドバイ』（原題: An Irish Goodbye／短編）【日本初公開】

母を弔うためにアイルランドの実家へ帰ってきたトゥーロッホは、疎遠だったダウン症の弟と再会。弟を叔母に預けようとするトゥーロッホだったが、「母のやり残した100 のこと」を一緒に叶えるうち心境に変化が生まれる。本年のアカデミー賞短編実写映画賞を受賞した、ちょっぴり風変わりで限りなく優しいハートウォーミング・コメディ。

『ステップス・オブ・フリーダム』（原題: Steps of Freedom: The Story of Irish Dance）【日本初公開】

イングランドによる支配の中で原型が生まれ、今では国境を超えて世界中で親しまれているアイリッシュ・ダンス。その何世紀にも渡る物語や抵抗運動ともいえる歴史を、貴重なフィルムや力強いオリジナルパフォーマンス映像と共に追うドキュメンタリー。ダンサーの第一人者であるマイケル・フラットレーはじめリアノン・ギデンズらミュージシャンも登場。音楽ファンも必見！

『ベルファスト』（原題: Belfast）

北アイルランド・ベルファスト出身の名優、ケネス・ブラナーが自身の幼少期を投影した自伝的作品。ノスタルジックで力強いモノクロ映像が描き出す、ある少年と家族の厳しくも愛に満ちた、永遠の記憶─。変わりゆく土地と時代の中で未来へと一歩を踏み出そうとする人々の姿が感動的に胸に刻み付けられる。

『恋人はアンバー』（原題: Dating Amber）

自身がゲイだと認められない高校生エディとレズビアンであることを隠しているクラスメイトのアンバー。平穏に卒業を迎えるため、二人は恋人同士のフリをすることに！ 同性愛が合法となった直後の1995 年のアイルランドを舞台に、自分らしく生きようともがく若者の青春を描くチャーミングな物語。PULP やU2 などの挿入曲も印象的。

1985 年のダブリン。家庭にも学校にも居場所がない14 歳のコナーは、街で見かけた年上の女の子ラフィーナに一目惚れ、バンドも組んでいないのにPV への出演を依頼してしまって……。デュラン・デュラン、ザ・ジャム、ザ・キュアーなど80 年代UK サウンドにのせて友情や初恋のときめきを鮮やかに切り取った青春エンタテイメントの傑作。

『ソング・オブ・ザ・シー　海のうた』（原題: Song of the Sea）

アイルランドの神話をベースに、幼い兄妹の大冒険、そして別れを、まるで絵本が動き出したかのような温かみ溢れる映像美で描く珠玉のファンタジー。監督は本作で2 度目のアカデミー賞長編アニメーション賞ノミネートとなったトム・ムーア。制作はアイルランドで“ポスト・スタジオジブリ”と称されるアニメーションスタジオ「カートゥーン・サルーン」。

『ザ・コミットメンツ』（原題: The Commitments）

『もうひとつの楽園　4K デジタルリマスター版』（原題: This Other Eden）【日本初公開】

監督：ミュリエル・ボックス

出演：オードリー・ダルトン、レスリー・フィリップス、ナイル・マクギニス

アイルランド独立戦争の最中、敵の銃撃により殺害されてしまった司令官。戦後彼は英雄となり銅像が建立されるが、その除幕式に集まった人々の間で上へ下への大騒動が持ち上がる。ルイス・ダルトンの戯曲を元にしたコメディ。英国人監督のミュリエル・ボックスは、アイルランドの長編映画を監督した初の女性となった。

『静かなる男　デジタルリマスター版』（原題: The Quiet Man）

生まれ故郷アイルランドに帰ってきたアメリカ人の元ボクサーが、一目惚れした勝気な娘と結婚するものの彼女の粗暴な兄がそれを認めず、ついには決闘まで発展する。自らもアイルランド移民の子であったフォードが、豊かな大自然と共にアイリッシュの高潔な魂を高らかに歌い上げた名作。アカデミー賞で監督賞を受賞。

Irish Film Festival 2023 Brings the Best of Irish Cinema to Tokyo

The Embassy of Ireland is proud to announce a highly anticipated Irish Film Festival in Tokyo. The Festival will take place from 2 to 15 June 2023 at the prestigious Kadokawa Cinema Yurakuchou in central Tokyo.

Building on the great success of Irish films on the international stage, this festival promises to captivate audiences with a curated selection of nine outstanding Irish films.

Irish films have gained significant recognition globally, and this festival will be a platform to showcase the diverse talents of Irish actors, directors and filmmakers. Recent successes, such as the 9 nominations in the 2023 Academy Awards, have established Ireland as a powerhouse in the international film industry.

To celebrate and support this growth in Irish film,, the Embassy of Ireland, in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute and film distributors, Mermaid Film and Valeria, is delighted to present a range of new and classic popular films that exemplify the remarkable creativity and storytelling skills of Irish filmmakers.

IFF Tokyo 2023 will feature a line-up spanning decades of Irish cinematic achievements. The Festival will include modern films such as Sing Street and Belfast, and classic Irish films such as The Commitments. From the iconic 1950s film "The Quiet Man" directed by John Ford, to the recent Oscar-winning, gentle comedy "An Irish Goodbye," which won Best International Short at the 2023 Academy Awards, attendees will be treated to a rich tapestry of Irish storytelling. The festival will premiere a number of films including a documentary on the global appeal of traditional Irish dance as well as a 1959 classic ‘This Other Eden’, the first Irish film directed by a woman.  It will also showcase Ireland’s thriving animation sector with a screening of the award winning animated film, Song of the Sea, by world-renowned Irish animation studio, Cartoon Saloon. Some of the films will also feature fascinating Q&A discussions with people directed involved in the films themselves. And the films will be screened at two different times of day to provide an opportunity for as many people as possible to view their films of choice.

The festival will feature the following films:

• "An Irish Goodbye" (Short) Japan Premiere - A heart-warming comedy about a man returning to his parents' home in Ireland to mourn his mother and rediscovering his bond with his estranged brother. Directed by Tom Berkley and Ross White, it won the Best International Short award at the 2023 Academy Awards.
• "Steps of Freedom: The Story of Irish Dance" Japan Premiere - A captivating documentary that traces the origins and global popularity of Irish dance, featuring celebrated dancers and musicians including  Michael Flatley and Rhiannon Giddens.
• "Belfast" - An autobiographical work by Kenneth Branagh, depicting a boy and his family in 1960s Belfast, amidst a changing land and times. Starring Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, and Ciarán Hinds.
• "Dating Amber" - Set in 1995, this charming coming-of-age film follows two high school students who pretend to be lovers to hide their true sexual orientations. Directed by David Freyne and starring Finn O'Shea, Laura Petticrew, Sharon Hogan, and Barry Ward.
• "Sing Street" - A delightful musical set in 1980s Dublin, where a young boy forms a band to impress a girl he likes. Directed by John Carney and featuring Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Aidan Gillen, and Lucy Boynton.
• "Song of the Sea" - Based on Irish mythology, this enchanting animated film tells the story of a young brother and sister's magical adventures. Directed by Tom Moore and featuring the voices of David Rawle, Brendan Gleeson, and Fionnula Flanagan.
• "The Commitments" - A spirited comedy-drama about a group of young musicians in Dublin who come together to form a soul band. Directed by Alan Parker and starring Robert Arkins, Andrew Strong, and Michael Ahern.
• "This Other Eden" Japan Premiere - A comedic tale set in post-war Ireland, following the uproar caused by the unveiling of a bronze statue. Directed by Muriel Box and featuring Audrey Dalton, Leslie Phillips, and Niall McGinnis.
• "The Quiet Man" (Digitally Remastered) - A timeless classic directed by John Ford, showcasing the love story of an American ex-boxer and a strong-willed Irish woman. Starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Barry Fitzgerald.

Film Talk Programme:

Saturday, 3 June: Gala Opening will set the stage for an exciting festival Join Embassy representatives for a screening of this year’s Oscar prizewinning short film in a  double bill screening with the ever popular musical film, Sing Street.

Sunday 4 June: "Steps of Freedom," Following the screening, Taka Hayashi, a renowned Irish dance teacher who is featured in the documentary, will offer his  unique perspectives on Irish dance.

Wednesday 7 June: "The Commitments," After the screening radio personality Peter Barakan will share his insights during a special talk.

Film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and all who appreciate the magic of cinema are invited to join us at the Irish Film Festival. The festival promises to be an unforgettable experience, taking audiences on a journey through the rich tapestry of Irish storytelling.
